Evaluating Student Learning in the new Climate Studies and Action Certificate

Principal Investigator: Tara Ivanochko, Professor of Teaching, EOAS

Project description

A new UBC-wide Climate Studies and Action Certificate was developed in response to the 2019 UBC Climate Emergency Declaration. The Certificate includes learning objectives (LOs) related to climate literacy, justice, action, wellbeing and their interrelationships. The first full offering of the Certificate will be in 2023W. We propose to obtain a baseline snapshot of students’ state of knowledge, skills, and aspirations during early offerings of the Certificate.  The outcome of this work will lay the groundwork to develop a future interdisciplinary assessment tool to be used for longitudinal studies of the Certificate’s impact on students, aligned with the LOs.

Research questions

  1. In what ways does the Certificate support progression in students’ states of knowledge, experience, and aspirations related to the Certificate LOs:
    • across different disciplines/majors
    • temporally through the Certificate core curriculum
    • between Certificate students and non-Certificate students in additional courses.
  2. What common themes emerge from student responses in this work that can be used for future development of specific assessment items for longitudinal studies?
