Project description

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PharmSci) trains students to be pharmacists. Throughout their pharmacy degree, students complete 44 weeks of practicum, during which time they are directly supervised by practicing pharmacists, also known as practice educators. The Faculty will host an EDI training workshop in Fall 2023 for practice educators to equip them with tools to foster cultural safety in the experiential learning environment. Currently there is lack of evidence on the best approach to evaluation of EDI training in health care professionals and the lasting impacts. This SoTL project will encompass development and implementation of an evaluation plan to determine the uptake and impacts of this training in Practice Educators and students.

Research questions

  • How do we measure uptake/efficacy of EDI practices for practice educators within the pharmacy experiential education setting.
  • Participant perspectives:
    • A) What was the participant experience with the workshop delivery and content?
    • B) What was the impact of our workshop on preceptor perceptions related to anti-racism? Did this workshop change the way they approach setting up the learning environment and if so, how?
    • C) What was the participant uptake of the workshop learning objectives and goals?
    • D) To what extent have they applied the learnings to their practice and teaching? 3)
  • Student perspectives: what is the student experience on practicum since the implementation of this EDI Practice Educator training?
